Artist Statement
The activity of making a quilt created its own community
around it – bringing people together -
creating heirlooms for the future. The generational passing on of creative
processes and skills, the re-using of the merest scrap of precious fabric or a
last remnant served as a way of preserving a craft and keeping a memory. Old
became new.
The sense of fellowship was an important part of the experience – ultimately the aspect of my research that came to interest me most. The bringing together of small pieces – the bonding together of fabric mirroring the blending of the group of makers. Reflecting on a combination of contemporary and eclectic elements, etiquette and a sense of occasion – I have stitched together a new expression of matter and material, drawing the viewer into the past lest they forget the importance of this kind of connection. |
